My Article 'Planet Earth Must Be Saved' got published on Associated Content

Planet Earth Must Be Saved
There is an immediate need for the G8 countries to sit across a table and seriously start thinking about how best they can help to save our dying planet.

  1. Hey Rajesh,

I just read your article and you're so right.

I'm living in one of this developed countries. Austria is a small country and not a member of G8 but we're in the middle of Europe and I love our nature, our mountains, our lakes, the green grass, the trees and the fresh air. I don't wanna loose this all and our children should have a nature, which is worth living in it, too.

Here in Austria, the people I know talk about alternatives very often. It's because we are a touristic country and the most valuable thing we have is our nature. That's the reason for most tourists to visit Austria. But it isn't that easy.

I think one of the major problems is the still mighty oil lobby. I'm sure, many alternatives already exist and many scientists have ideas and prototypes, but the oil lobby has bought them to have technologies, when the oil reserves are gone.

Nowadays some major car manufacturers in Europe and in the USA start to produce hybride cars, which drive with normal fuel and with electric power. It's a beginning but I don't think it's the right alternative. This hybride cars cause other problems. What to do with the mighty batteries they use at the end of their lifetime? They contain a lot of problematic and poisonous materials. And the cars still use normal fuel. Not so much as a normal car, but they use it.

The next thing about this cars is, they are expensive. So not everyone who can afford a normal car can also afford a hybride car. If they got cheaper, maybe more people would have one.

Another alternative fuel here in Austria is natural gas. It's not so harmful for the environment than the normal fuel made of oil, but there are not many petrol stations who sell it. If you drive a car running with natural gas, you've problems to get fuel everywhere and the next thing is, that you're not allowed to park in public parking garages with this car. I don't know why, maybe it's to dangerous but it's a problem.

The third alternative fuel we have is made of plants, normally of the oilseed rape or canola. Maybe you've heard of it. Cars or machines which use the diesel-fuel may also use this fuel, but not every normal diesel-engine is made for it. And the problem with this fuel is, if every car would run with it, we wouldn't have enough cultivation areas for this plant.

You're absolutely right with the thing about standby. When i stop watching TV, I switch it off. I don't need standby at my TV set. The only device using standby in my flat is the video tape recorder. There it's needet but all other devices can be switched off after usage.

Now the EU (European Community) is giong to forbid normal light bulbs and force people to use the new energy-saving bulbs. This has also two sides of a medal. On the one side, you can really save energy when you use it in rooms, where you need light for a long time. But on the other hand, if you use them in rooms where light is switched on only for short periodes (corridor, toilet, garage) this bulbs have contra-productive effects, cause they are consuming much more energy when switched on than a normal bulb. Only when they're on for a longer time, they really save energy. So I use for this rooms special bulbs with halogen gas. They don't consum so much energy when switched on and consum less energy than normal bulbs when switched on for a longer period. But they are expensive.

So we can hope, that technologies, who can help save our planet will get cheaper, so that everyone can afford them, cause they only have effect, when everyone uses them.

At last I have on question. You are located in India. So what do you think of the hypothesis that the two countries with the now fastest industrial and technological development and growing, India and China, will cause the most greenhouse gases in the near future? Do you think this could be right, or do politicians and scientists of the developed countries only search for someone who can be blamed for environmental destruction in the future.

Will India and China launch new technologies for saving our planet?
